Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is a commonly performed plastic surgery procedure to decrease the size of large pendulous breasts, lifting and significantly improving the shape of the breasts. The goal is to give the woman smaller and better-shaped breasts in proportion with the rest of her body and to improve the symptoms associated with the excessive breast weight. In addition to reducing upper back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain and moisture-related rashes beneath the breasts, breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty) surgery may allow increased participation in, and enjoyment of, a variety of physical activities.
When there are significant symptoms associated with large pendulous breasts that have not responded to non-surgical treatment, insurance coverage is sometimes possible. The lifting and reshaping of moderately enlarged drooping breasts, especially if there are no symptoms, is not covered by insurance and is more appropriately termed a breast lift (mastopexy).
