Dr. Mayfield's Six Steps to Achieving Healthy
and Beautiful Skin

  1. Protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun.
Stop being a "sun worshipper!" If you are active outdoors, protect your skin with sun-protective clothing, hats, umbrellas, or shade. Use a daily topical broad-spectrum sunscreen protecting against both UVA and UVB with a SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 15; when you are active outdoors, use a product with an SPF of at least 30 and reapply it every 2 to 3 hours. Remember to apply product on those often forgotten areas such as the backs of the hands, the upper chest, the neck, and the ears.

Dr. Mayfield recommends that you include sun protection as part of your everyday skin care regimen. Our Medical Spa carries a variety of high quality broad-spectrum sunscreens with SPF ranging from 15 to 45 including Anthelios SX from La Roche-Posay, a newer FDA approved moisturizing sunscreen that resists weakening from sun exposure, providing long lasting ultraviolet light protection and hydration.
  2. Stop smoking.
Smoking is, without a doubt, a significant factor in premature aging of the skin. Smoke has a drying effect on the surface of the skin. Because smoking constricts blood vessels, it may reduce the amount of blood flowing to the skin, thus depleting the skin of oxygen and essential nutrients. Smoking may also reduce the body's store of Vitamin A, which provides protection against some skin-damaging agents produced by smoking.
  3. Exercise regularly.
Exercise stimulates blood flow to the skin, supplying much needed oxygen and essential nutrients. Avoid high impact activities, however. Biking, swimming, and low impact aerobics are examples of preferred exercises to maintain optimal skin health.
  4. Eat right and keep your weight stable.
Frequent dieting resulting in fluctuating weight may result in loose inelastic skin and stretch marks. Remember, "you are what you eat!"

Also remember to drink plenty of water. Dehydration can result in dry, itchy skin with poor elasticity. All high-quality skin care programs, such as those offered in our Medical Spa, include topical moisturizers.
  5. Invest in the health of your skin by embracing a comprehensive medical-grade at-home skin care program.
A complete skin care program should include five key elements for maximizing skin appearance and health:

    • Cleansing to leave the skin feeling fresh and clean without excessive dryness or oiliness
    • Toning/exfoliating opens pores and removes dead skin cells and other debris
    • Cell repair/damage prevention using topical anti-oxidants, such as Vitamin C and Vitamin A (retinol), to improve the appearance of fine lines/wrinkles and unven pigmentation, to restore a healthier and more youthful appearance
    • Moisturizing to hydrate cells and help restore skin elasticity
    • Protection from damaging UV rays using sunscreens or sun blocks with broad-spectrum UVA/UVB ultraviolet light protection
Employing such a program, taking only a few minutes a day, can deliver significant benefits such as:

    • Diminished appearance of fine lines & wrinkles
    • Softened lines of expression
    • Improved hydration and elasticity of dry skin
    • Minimized appearance of pores
    • Correction of uneven skin tone, improving rosacea (red skin), brown spots or splotchy pigmentation
    • Improved oily or acne-prone skin
    • Prevention and protection from damage caused by the sun, air pollution, smoking and stress
    • Healthier more radiant skin
Dr. Mayfield and our Medical Spa staff have the expertise to create and monitor an individualized custom-tailored and affordable skin care program for you, guiding you to purchase only those products required to meet your specific needs. There is never a fee for skin rejuvenation consultations or follow-up visits to discuss your progress. You pay only for the products you purchase.

Dr. Mayfield has personally selected only medical-grade physician-strength products for use and sale in our Medical Spa that have been clinically proven to deliver excellent results from universally respected manufacturers such as La Roche-Posay, SkinCeuticals, and SkinMedica. Each individual product is geared to its specific use and formulated utilizing unique medical-grade concentrations that cannot be found in over-the-counter skin care products.
  6. Utilize more aggressive skin rejuvenation techniques if necessary.
Many individuals will be very happy with the improvement in the health and appearance of their skin using the preceding five steps, however, some may need to go to "the next level." More aggressive non-surgical skin rejuvenation options available at The Medical Spa at Kevin Mayfield Plastic Surgery include:

    • Chemical peels or medical microdermabrasion to further improve skin texture, fine lines, and color irregularities
    • Injectable fillers to fill in deeper folds and wrinkles
    • BOTOX to correct wrinkles, such as frown lines, forehead wrinkles, and crow's feet, caused by overactive facial muscles
    • Laser treatments for skin tightening and wrinkle reduction, brown (age or sun) spot elimination, and facial vein eradication

Dr. Mayfield personally performs all of our Medical Spa treatments to ensure consistency so that only the highest quality of medical care and safety is achieved at all times.
