Breast Reconstruction Patient Spotlight

This 54 year-old woman requested breast reconstruction several years following double mastectomies for the treatment of breast cancer. There was no evidence of breast cancer recurrence. Various breast reconstruction techniques were thoroughly discussed. She chose tissue expansion and breast implant surgery. Three surgical procedures would be performed, spaced at 6 month intervals.

Tissue expander placement under the chest wall muscles was followed by saline solution inflation in the office to stretch the skin/muscle envelope and rebuild the breasts. The tissue expanders were replaced with permanent breast implants 6 months later. The nipples and areolas were reconstructed during a third and final stage.

The postoperative photographs were taken 3 months after her last surgery. The pink scars around the areolae will fade over the next 6 to 12 months.
